READING, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team traveled to Penn State Berks for a doubleheader, but couldn't pull away a game from its rivals with a 5-1 loss in game one and a 6-2 defeat in game two on Friday afternoon. The Nittany Lions fall to 11-9 for the season and 5-3 in the conference.
Junior
Becca Dougherty (Churchville, Pa.) led the Nittany Lions with a double and a solo shot in game one. Senior
Breanna Lineman (Philadelphia, Pa.) became the Nittany Lions all-time leader in triples with 13 after her game two triple to right field.
In game one Berks controlled the plate with the game's first five runs. In the final inning Dougherty led off the inning with a solo home run to center field to spur the Nittany Lions offense. Abington put another two runners on base in the inning, but the Nittany Lions couldn't drive them home.
Dougherty kicked off game two with an RBI double in the first inning, and with bases loaded Lineman added another run with her single through the left side. Abington held the lead until the third inning when Berks tied the game 2-2, highlighted by a triple to center field. Berks took advantage of an error in the fifth inning that scored three runs, and added another off an RBI single to put away Abington.
The softball team will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Lancaster Bible for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
