Softball Bounces Back with Sweep over Lancaster Bible

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team got back into the win column with a dominate series sweep over Lancaster Bible on Saturday afternoon. Abington took the first game 8-2, and shut out the Chargers in the second game 14-0 to improve to 13-9 overall.

Junior Becca Dougherty (Churchville, Pa.) dominated at the plate going 6-of-8 for the day with five runs and three runs batted in. On the mound she only gave up three hits in game two and struck out five batters.

The Nittany Lions took advantage of multiple errors in game one to take a 3-0 lead. In the fourth inning Caitlin Brasier (Levittown, Pa.) rocketed a triple to drive in another run. In the bottom half of the inning the home side added two runs but the Nittany Lions scored another four runs to take the game.

Dougherty set the tone in game two, driving in two runs with her double, and the Nittany Lions took advantage of the poor fielding from the Chargers for another run. In the second inning the consistent hitting of the Nittany Lions drove in four runs off of five singles. Abington added another three runs in the fourth inning with a double from Dougherty, an RBI single for Breanna Lineman (Philadelphia, PA.), and a pair of errors by the Chargers. The Nittany Lions drove in another four runs in the fifth inning to force the mercy rule.

Abington will be back in action on Monday when they host Penn State Harrisburg for a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
