Women's Lacrosse Slips Past Medaille, 18-16

BUFFALO NY – Coming off their seven game win streak the Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team traveled to Medaille College to face off against one of the NEAC's best.  An explosive second half for the Mavericks put the Nittany Lions unbeaten streak on the ropes, but Abington  held on to an 18-16 win over Medaille on Friday afternoon.

After the win the Nittany Lions are one of only two teams in the NCAA DIII who remain undefeated with an 8-0 record overall.  The Nittany Lions also sit atop of the NEAC standings with a 4-0 record and record their first win against the Maverick since joining the conference.

The reigning NEAC defensive player of the week Marah Hayes (Warminster, Pa.)  led the Nittany Lions with five goals and six assists. Freshman Meg Danella (Norristown, Pa.) got a ton of work in goal with 14 saves the most for her this season.

It didn't take long for the Mavericks to get on the board with a goal in the first minute, but Hayes tied the game only a minute later. Medaille pulled ahead again, but the Nittany Lions ripped off three consecutive goals with two from Alynn Phelan (Philadelphia, Pa.). Later in the first half the Nittany Lions held a four goal cushion with only two minutes left, and in the waning seconds the Mavericks stole momentum with two goals before the break.

The Nittany Lions opened the second half with three goals, but the Mavericks hung around with two goals of their own. Abington pushed its lead to 15-10, but the Mavericks charged back and tied the game 16-16 with only a minute remaining. With 53 seconds left in the game Hayes fired the game winning goal, and Michaela Mast (Pottstown, Pa.) put the game out of reach with only 10 seconds remaining.

The Nittany Lions continue their New York road trip when they travel to Hilbert tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
