ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's lacrosse has positioned themselves in the driver's seat to host the NEAC conference tournament after a huge 16-12 upset of Morrisville State on Sunday afternoon. Abington improves to 10-1 for the season and 6-1 in the conference.
The women's lacrosse program honored senior
Molly Wyman (Abington, Pa.) before the game for her contribution to the program for the past two seasons.
Freshman
Alynn Phelan (Philadelphia, Pa.) lifted the Nittany Lions with five goals including a crucial goal to shift momentum late in the second half. Sophomore
Marah Hayes (Warminster, Pa.) also recorded five goals before her second yellow card.
Melissa Felicetti (Willow Grove, Pa.) kicked off the scoring after nine scoreless minutes with a goal. Each team traded goals, but the Mustangs pulled ahead with a 4-2 lead. The Nittany Lions tied the game with under seven minutes in the first half. The Mustangs edged ahead again but Wyman answered to tie the game yet again. Both teams fought hard in the final minutes but the Mustangs pulled ahead with only 30 seconds remaining to take a 6-5 lead at the break.
An early yellow card in the second half helped Morrisville State take a 7-5 lead, but the Nittany Lions fired off a four goal run, kicked off by tremendous defense from Phelan to force a turnover on the goal keeper. She picked up the ball and fired it into the net to tie the game. Abington held a slim lead but
Sydney Burton (Glenside, Pa.) scored her first career goal for the Nittany Lions at a critical momentum to keep the distance between the Nittany Lions and Morrisville State.
Abington will continue their momentum when they travel to Keuka College next Friday with game time slated for 4:00 p.m.
