KEUKA PARK NY – The Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team took another step closer to hosting the NEAC Tournament after a gutty 16-12 win over Keuka College on Friday afternoon. The Nittany Lions improve to an incredible 11-1 overall and 8-1 in the conference.
Freshman
Alynn Phelan (Philadelphia, Pa. and
Veronica Baez (Hatboro) led the team with four goals apiece.
The Wolves were on the board early with a goal in under two minutes off the clock. Abington struggled to find any kind of momentum until Phelan converted her free position shot to kick off a 3-0 run. Keuka kept the game close until Baez turned the tide with a pair of goals to outscore the Wolves 4-1 in the final seven minutes of play.
The Nittany Lions stayed hot in the second half to pull ahead to a comfortable 13-5 advantage. Fighting for a spot in the NEAC playoffs the Wolves wouldn't go away quietly, pressing the Nittany Lions with the final four goals of the game, but couldn't overcome the deficit.
Abington is playing for history tomorrow. The Nittany Lions will face Wells College tomorrow afternoon, and if they win, Abington will host its first NEAC Conference tournament for next weekend.
