Nittany Lions Set to Host NEAC Tournament after 21-13 Win over Wells

AURORA, NY – The Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team's teams magic season continued with a dominate 21-13 win over Wells College to seal their share of the regular season championship on Saturday afternoon.  Prior to the season the Nittany Lions were an afterthought in the title race, being ranked ninth out of 10 teams in the preseason polls. Now the Nittany Lions will host the 2017 NEAC Women's Lacrosse tournament for the first time in program history.

After a tough start to the program the patience and hard work of the team has paid off this season, breaking almost every record in the history books on their way to a 12-1 season.

Freshman Alynn Phelan (Philadelphia, Pa.) had a career day for the Nittany Lions with eight goals in the rout. Sophomore Marah Hayes (Warminster, Pa.) had a terrific outing with seven goals three assists, eight ground balls, seven caused turnovers and five draw controls.

Sophomore Melissa Felicetti (Willow Grove, Pa.) came out early with a goal, but the Express charged out ahead on a 5-1 run behind three goals from Mackenzie Maloney. Abington woke up, and earned two goals within thirty seconds to cut the lead.  A pair of goals from Hayes helped the Nittany Lions pull ahead and take a 7-5 advantage. In the final two minutes Wells scored three goals to steal momentum and the lead before the break.

Abington came out of the break with a quick response to steal the lead back off of goals from Hayes and Phelan, but the home team battled to keep the game close.  Over the next five minutes Hayes and Phelan exploded for six goals between the two of them to give the Nittany Lions a comfortable lead. The Express came within three goals, but Abington shut out the hosts and scored five goals in the final ten minutes of action.

The Nittany Lions will enter the tournament as the number one seed and will face the winner of Cazenovia and Keuka College on Tuesday evening.
