Nittany Lions Cruise Past SUNY Poly in Series Sweep

MARCY, NY – The Penn State Abington baseball team continued its dominance in the conference with a sweep over SUNY Poly on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions took game one 4-1 after a dominate performance from Diego Melendez (Camden, NJ) and earned a big 14-8 win in game two.

Abington improves to 14-20 for the season and lead the NEAC with a 10-2 record.

Melendez dominated the Wildcats at the plate in game one. Over his seven innings of work the senior pitcher struck out seven batters and only gave up a single run in the final inning. Doubles from Trey Guaglionona (Abington, Pa.) and Christopher Hartman (Philadelphia, Pa.) put the Nittany Lions ahead of the Wildcats to break the five inning stalemate.

A huge second inning from Hartman helped the Nittany Lions score eight runs in game two. The junior took his first at bat in the inning for a home run to right field and followed it up later in the inning with a single to right field to drive in another two runs.  In game two Hartman went 3-of-6 with three runs scored and five of the Nittany Lions 13 runs batted in.  A huge seventh inning for the Wildcats made it 12-7, but Abington held on for the series sweep.

The Nittany Lions will have the week off before they host Penn State Berks for senior day on Saturday May 6, at 12:00 p.m.
