WASHINGTON, DC. – A home run from junior
Caitlin Brasier (Levittown, Pa.) propelled the Penn State Abington softball team to a series sweep over Gallaudet on Sunday afternoon. Abington earned a 4-1 victory in game one, and crushed the Bison in a 13-0 shutout for game two. Abington leads in the NEAC South race with a 9-7 record overall and 5-1 in the conference.
Brasier led the Nittany Lions going 3-of-7 with three RBIs and two runs scored between both games. Senior
Emily Wrenn (Hatboro, Pa.) earned the win in game one and junior pitcher
Becca Dougherty (Churchville, Pa.) shut out the Bison in game two only allowing four hits in the five innings.
The Bison struck first in game one with an RBI double in the third inning, but Abington responded in the fourth. Dougherty took advantage of an error by the right fielder and
Isabel Hoch (Philadelphia, Pa.) crossed the plate to tie the game. Two batters later Brasier slammed her pitch to deep right field for the two run home run. Later in the inning the Nittany Lions finished out the scoring with a
Jessica Carp (Dresher, Pa.) suicide squeeze sacrifice bunt.
Abington poured it on in game two with two runs right off the bat in the first inning. Hoch followed up the two run first inning with her two run single in the second inning. The Nittany Lions drove in another two runs in the third inning, highlighted by a single to center field from
Samantha Friend (Philadelphia, PA.). In the fourth inning the Nittany Lions broke open the game with four runs. Both Hoch and Friend drove in runs off of singles, and
Amanda McLean (Philadelphia, Pa.) drew a walk with bases loaded to score another run. In the fifth the Nittany Lions put up another two runs to put the game out of reach for the Bison.
Abington will host nonconference foe Wesley on Tuesday for a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
