ABINGTON, Pa – The Penn State Abington women's soccer team earned it's first win of the season with a gritty 1-0 decision over Alfred State on Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions improve to 1-4 for the season after the upset.
Junior goalkeeper
Samantha Friend (Philadelphia, Pa.) recorded seven saves to keep the clean sheet and her win. After today's game Friend moves into second place in career saves with 176, only six shy from being the all-time leader in saves.
In the first half neither team could break through in a defensive struggle, but in the 65
th minute the Pioneers earned a penalty kick, and couldn't convert with the shot high over the crossbar. Only a minute later the Nittany Lions capitalized off the mistake when
Haley Miller (Hatfield, Pa.) sent her pass in the box for
Jill Osborn (Philadelphia, Pa.) to finish. Osborn fired her shot straight past the goalkeeper for Abington's first goal of the season. In the final minutes, the Nittany Lions survived the pressure from the Pioneers, and held on for the 1-0 victory.
Abington will be back in action on the road when they open conference action against Wilson College on Saturday September 23, at 3:00 p.m.
