ABINGTON, Pa. – A huge second quarter push for the Penn State Abington women's basketball team helped them to a 78-61 win over rivals Penn State Berks on Tuesday night. The Nittany Lions improve to 10-6 and 5-3 in the conference.
Senior guard
Symantha Marrero (Philadelphia, PA) led the pack with 23 points, and right behind
Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, PA) added 19 points to her total. Senior center
Grace Dewey (Falls Church, Va.) was strong on the boards with another double-double that included 17 points and 17 rebounds.
Abington started the game with the hot hand behind the arc, with four shots from downtown to give the hosts the early 12-2 advantage. After the quick start Abington struggled to put up points, and allowed Berks to creep back into the game. Three points in the final 30 seconds for Abington helped them hold a 17-14 lead at the break.
Berks knocked down the first shot of the half from three to tie the game, but Abington would respond quickly. Abington notched 32 points in the quarter which was the highest of the season for points in a quarter. A big 13 point quarter from Marrero led the potent attack and helped them control the game with a 49-25 lead at the half.
In the second half Abington continued to control the game with a 20 point advantage throughout the third and fourth quarter. Berks pushed for a late rally in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to overcome Abington.
The Nittany Lions will be back in action when they travel to Lancaster Bible for a tough NEAC contest on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
