POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Penn State Abington men's basketball won the Vassar Tip-Off Tournament after a come from behind 79-75 win over the hosts on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions improve to 2-1 after the win.
For their outstanding performance over the weekend, sophomore
Pernell Ghee (Germantown, PA) was named the Tournament MVP after dominating the championship game with 17 points. Junior forward
Bobby Olsen (Florida, NY) was also named to the All-Tournament Team with another standout performance of 15 points.
The First half was hotly contested with eight lead changes through the first ten minutes of the half. Abington struggled from behind the arc, only hitting 2-of-10 shots, but made up for it getting 16 of their 21 points in the paint. With six minutes left in the game Vassar began to pull ahead with an 11-0 run for the Brewers. Senior
Jordan Lomax (West Haven, CT) cut the deficit right before the half ended, but Vassar still held a 43-36 advantage at the break.
It didn't take long for the Nittany Lions to bounce back. A huge three pointer from Olsen energized the Nittany Lions, and with 14:03 on the clock, Ghee drained his free throws to tie the game. Abington continued to hold a slim advantage thanks to
John Ryan's (Warminster, PA) team leading eight second half points. The Brewers didn't back down and took the lead back with only two minutes remaining in the game, but Abington clawed back into the lead after they hit 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to win.
The Nittany Lions will return home to host St. Mary's (Md.) on Tuesday night before Thanksgiving at 6:00 p.m.
