FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Penn State Abington baseball team traveled down to North Carolina for their season opener, but came away empty handed getting swept by Frostburg State on Friday afternoon. The Nittany Lions dropped game one 6-1, and fell in the second 23-9.
In game one the Nittany Lions were on the board first with an RBI single from
Julio Aira IV (Miami Fla.). The Bobcats continued on with six unanswered runs off of nine hits.
The Nittany Lions were explosive at the plate in game two, but started in the hole down by four runs after the top of the first inning. Junior
Tyler DiPatri (Pedricktown, NJ) chipped away at the lead with a sac fly in the bottom half of the inning.
Abington capitalized off a passed ball in the third inning to add on another run. In the fourth inning Frostburg State pushed its lead to 7-2 aided by a two run home run to left field. The Nittany Lions responded scoring five runs in the bottom half of the inning that was highlighted by a two run single from
Jon Rivera (Egg Harbor City, NJ).
Frostburg State would go on and add another 16 runs which was too much for the Nittany Lions to overcome.
Abington will continue its road trip in North Carolina tomorrow when they face off against Stevenson University at 11:00 a.m.
