Abington Tops Cazenovia, 77-68

Cazenovia, NY – The Penn State Abington Women's Basketball Teams came out on top over with a 77-68 win at Cazenovia College. Four different Nittany Lions scored in double digit that propelled the Lions to victory. Abington regained second place in the NEAC South Division and improved their record to 11-8 overall and 6-5 in the NEAC.

Junior Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, PA) celebrated her birthday with an impressive 25 points and contributed 8 assists for the Lions. Senior Symantha Marrero (Philadelphia, PA) landed 18 points, while Freshman Iman Richmond (Chicago, IL) notched 11 points during the game. Senior Grace Dewey (Falls Church, Va.) was relentless on defense as she had 7 blocks that were vital in the win.

Abington had the advantage over Cazenovia for the majority of the first quarter. The team went on an 8-0 late in the quarter. During the run, Rodriguez drove through the Cazenovia defense and scored a lay-up in the paint to give the Lions a nine points lead.

The second quarter offered a similar story line. The Nittany Lions went on a 12-6 run that gave them a 12 points lead halfway in the quarter. During the run, Marrero made a big three pointer from the arch that gave Abington the momentum. The visitors led as much as 13 points throughout the quarter, but at half time the Nittany Lions held a 10 point edge.

An impressive first half was duplicated at the beginning of the second half. Abington pushed the lead to 18 points, which came after Richmond knocked down a pair of critical free-throws.
In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats clawed their way back to make the game competitive, however a strong effort on defense kept them from taking the lead.

The Nittany Lions will be back in action tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. when they travel to Morrisvlle State.
