Nittany Lions Rally Falls Short to Mustangs, 69-65

MORRISVILLE, NY – Senior center Grace Dewey (Falls Church, Va.) put up a dominate performance with a season high 22 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome Morrisville State in a 69-65 loss on Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions fall to 11-9 after the loss and 6-6 in the NEAC.

Along with her 22 points, Dewey racked up 18 rebounds on the boards. Junior guard Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, PA) chipped in 19 points for the day.

In the first few minutes of action the Mustangs jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but a deep three from Rodriguez kick started the Nittany Lions.  Abington clamped down on defense to hold the Mustangs to seven points in the final seven minutes of the period.  Rodriguez was almost perfect from behind the arc, with four three-balls that helped the Nittany Lions take a 16-14 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Mustangs rebounded after the break with an 11-1 run to start the second period. A pair of buckets for Angie Tabares (Hackensack, NJ) helped the Nittany Lions back within five points in the final seconds of the period.

After the half Morrisville State tried to push its lead to double-digits, but every time the hosts would reach that mark, Dewey would answer and scored eight of the Nittany Lions 14 points in the period.

With three minutes off the clock, Morrisville State looked like they were in control of the game with a 15 point lead, but Abington would claw its way back into the game.  In the final minute of action Dewey hit a clutch shot from downtown to bring the Nittany Lions within three points of the tie.  The Mustangs were able to stifle the rally by hitting their clutch free-throws to hold on.

Next the Nittany Lions will travel to the College of Saint Elizabeth on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
