MORRISTOWN, NJ - After a slow start the Penn State Abington women's basketball pulled away to a 75-60 win over the College of Saint Elizabeth on Wednesday night. The Nittany Lions move to 12-9 after tonight's win, and picked up an important conference win with a 7-6 mark in the NEAC.
Junior guard Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, PA) hit a season high 34 points leading all scorers. Senior center Grace Dewey (Falls Church, Va.)Â shattered her career record for rebounds with 24 on the evening. With 235 rebounds for the season Dewey is only 14 rebounds shy of a single-season program record with three games remaining.
An ugly first quarter by the Nittany Lions saw the Eagles streak out to a 12-3 lead in the first five minutes of action. Â Three-point shooting and free throws for the Nittany Lions helped them to 11 points in the first quarter.
The Eagles continued their advantage over the Nittany Lions, and pushed the lead to double-digits getting their points off free-throws. A pair of three-pointers from Rodriguez and Symantha Marrero (Philadelphia, PA) cut the deficit to three points.
In the second half the Eagles scored the first points, but the Nittany Lions fired back with an 8-0 run to tie the game. Â After tying the game, Abington push its lead to nine with tough points in the paint. Later in the fourth the Nittany Lions were able to hold off the Eagles with 12 points in the paint.
The Nittany Lions will be back in action on Saturday for senior day when they host Wilson College at 3:00 p.m.
