MYRTLE BEACH, SC – In their final games of spring break the Penn State Abington softball team split two games on Friday afternoon. The Nittany Lions earned their first win of the season in a thrilling 5-4 win over Wentworth in extra innings. Next the Nittany Lions dropped a 7-6 heartbreaker to Brevard College.
Game One
In the first game of the day, the Nittany Lions fell behind to the Leopards in the first three innings down 2-0. Abington responded in the fourth inning when
Sam Goetz (New Egypt, N.J.) stole home to get the Nittany Lions on the board. Later in the inning
Mariah Rebitz (Cheltenham, PA) took advantage of an error to tie the game.
The Leopards would again take the lead adding another two runs in the fifth and sixth inning. Down 4-2 in the final inning the Nittany Lions with two runners on base and one out senior
Becca Dougherty (Churchville, Pa.) drove a deep ball for the sacrifice fly. Another out later
Cara Shackelford (Douglassville, PA ) stepped up to the plate and tied the game with her RBI single to force extra innings.Â
Neither team could break through in the eighth and ninth inning in a tense matchup. Freshman
Jackie McMenamin (Oreland, PA) came away the hero wither her walk off RBI double to win the game.
Game Two
In the second game the Nittany Lions got off to a fast start with five runs in the first two innings. Freshman
Kourtney Schneider (Ewing, NJ) highlighted the scoring when she slammed the pitch to deep center field for the RBI triple. A double in the second inning from
Caitlin Brasier (Levittown, PA) gave the Nittany Lions a 5-3 lead after the second inning.Â
The Tornadoes responded with the next four runs, but the Nittany Lions tried to rally for another win by taking advantage of fielding errors.
Abington will be back in action for a doubleheader when they travel to Widener University next Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
