LANCASTER, PA – Two grand slams from
Ryan McCarty (Yardley, PA) and
Joseph Rizzo (Gibbstown, NJ) helped the Penn State Abington baseball team smash Lancaster Bible 19-9 in game one. After a four hour contest, the Nittany Lions faced the Chargers in game two, but was suspended in the 7
th inning due to darkness. Abington currently trails in the top of the seventh down 11-2, and will be resumed later.
The Nittany Lions captured their first conference win of the season and improve to 9-7 overall.
McCarty and Rizzo both dominated at the plate, with seven runs and 10 RBI's between the two freshmen. Â Also on the mound McCarty had a solid outing with five innings pitched, and three strikeouts which was enough to earn him his third win of the season.
Tied 1-1 after two innings, Abington tacked on four runs in the third with RBI singles from
Brett Guaglionona (Abington, Pa.) and
Kyle Marshall (Fairless Hills, PA).
The Nittany Lions exploded in the fifth inning, taking an 11-2 lead off of the first grand slam of the year. Rizzo took his pitch deep to left field for his first career home run, and grand slam for the Nittany Lions.
Later in the sixth inning Abington took advantage of mistakes from Lancaster bible to increase their lead to 12 runs. The Chargers responded in the bottom half of the inning and added six runs of their own to cut the deficit to 14-8.
McCarty put the game out of reach for the Chargers when he rocketed his pitch to right field for the second grand slam of the game and the first of his career.
The Nittany Lions will look to finish game two of the series at a later time, but Abington will travel to Gallaudet next on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
