ABINGTON, Pa – Coming off a big win Saturday afternoon, the Penn State Abington Softball team continued their success on Sunday. The Nittany Lions pulled off two impressive wins that had a similar storyline in both games. The wins improved their record to 3-1 in the NEAC and 4-10 overall.
In game one, Abington scored in the 1
st inning after senior
Becca Dougherty (Churchville, Pa.) landed a base hit down the infield line. The hit drove home a run and advanced a runner for the Nittany Lions. SUNY Poly quickly responded during the top of the 2nd inning when their batters drove home four runs to give them a 4-1 lead.
However, Abington found their rhythm at the plate during the bottom of the 5
th inning. Junior
Samantha Friend (Southampton, PA) scored on a center field hit by Dougherty that cut the SUNY Poly lead in half. Later in the inning, freshman
Cassondra Towle (Lambertville, NJ) was up to bat with the bases loaded and one out. Towle made the most of her opportunity at the plate and landed a vital hit down the middle of the field. This resulted in two runners scoring on the play that tied the game at 4-4. Just moments later, sophomore
Gina Cuozzo (Havertown, Pa.) gave Abington a 6-4 lead after she landed with her single that drove in two runs. Abington then went on and scored another run in the inning.
SUNY Poly mustered out two more runs, however that wouldn't be enough. The Nittany Lions edged the Wildcats in a thriller 7-6 in game one.
The Nittany Lions and Wildcats founded themselves in another close matchup in game two. SUNY Poly quickly took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but again Abington answered. During the bottom of the 1
st inning, freshman
Kourtney Schneider (Ewing, NJ) reached base after an error was made by the SUNY Poly shortstop. The error advanced a runner home to put the Nittany Lions on the board.
In the bottom of the second, Schneider found herself in a situation with the bases loaded and one out. Schneider made the most of the scenario like her teammate in the first game as she reached first base on the hit. Her hit drove home two runs for the Nittany Lions and gave them a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the 2
nd inning.
During the top of the 5
th inning, the Nittany Lions led 6-3 however the Wildcats would put up two more runs to make it 6-5. Abington would go on and score one more run while their defense closed out the game.
Abington will be back action on Wednesday as they host Gallaudet University at 3:00 P.M.Â
