ROSEMONT, P.A. – Due to future inclimate weather this upcoming Friday, the Penn State Abington softball team traveled to Rosemont College two days early for a friendly doubleheader. The Nittany Lions split the day with the Ravens, and are now 3-6 on the season.
In game one, Abington defeated Rosemont 14-0 in five innings. The Nittany Lions offense was powered by senior
Becca Dougherty (Churchville, PA) who drove in 5 RBI's and sophomore
Jackie McMenamin (Oreland, PA) who recorded 4. Freshman
Jailyn Bishop (Philadelphia, PA) got her first hit of her collegiate career by ripping a ball through the 5-6 hole. Nine of Abington's twelve batters got a at least one hit in game one, for a season best of 13 team rbi's.
The Ravens clawed their way to a win in game two by defeating Abington 7-6. Abington pushed one run across the plate in the top of the first with an RBI single from
Stephanie Andreoli (Richboro, PA) that scored
Akia Marshall (Albuquerque, NM). Rosemont answered back in the bottom of the second when they took a 2-1 lead and held it until the top of the fourth inning, when the Nittany Lions retaliated.
Senior
Danielle Hebling (Warminster, Pa.) got the rally going when she smacked a double deep to left field. Hebling advanced to third after a single from teammate
Kourtney Schneider (Ewing, NJ). Freshman
Mary Kate Smith (Springfield, PA) tied the game with an RBI single to score Hebling. The Ravens walked in Abington's third and fourth runs to give Abington a 4-2 lead. Then
Stephanie Andreoli and
Ryann Rhoades (Philadelphia, PA) delivered back to back RBI's forming a comfortable 6-2 lead. However, sloppy defense in the bottom of the fourth and sixth inning by the Nittany Lions, allowed the Ravens to score a total of four unearned runs.
Up next, Abington will travel to Wesley College on Saturday March 23 for a 1:00pm doubleheader.
