CHESTER, P.A.- The Penn State Abington women's softball team did not have much luck on Saint Patrick's Day after dropping a two-game double header to Widener University. The Nittany Lions now drop to 3-8 on the year.
In game one, Abington produced seven hits as a team with sophomores
Jackie McMenamin (Oreland, PA) and
Stephanie Andreoli (Richboro, PA) leading the offense with two each. The Nittany Lions scored their first run in the top of the third inning after
Ryann Rhoades (Philadelphia, PA) led off the inning with a single to right field. She advanced to second on a wild pitch, followed by a sacrifice bunt from
Mary Kate Smith (Springfield, PA) that turned into an error, able to score Rhoades. In the fourth inning,
Stephanie Andreoli smacked Abington's first home run of the season over the left field fence to give her team a 2-1 lead. However Abington was unable to push another run across the plate and fell short 4-2 to the Pride.
Game two was over in a quick five innings due to Widener's powerful offense producing 8 runs. Abington's offense was not as strong, only able to collect three hits as a team, again with Andreoli leading the offense with two hits. The other hit from Abington came from senior
Danielle Hebling (Warminster, Pa.) who had a nice single to right field in the top of fifth inning.
Abington will be back in action next Saturday March 23
rd when they travel to Wesley College for a double header beginning at 1:00pm.
