LANCASTER, PA- The Penn State Abington women's softball team traveled to Lancaster Bible College on Friday afternoon for their first NEAC competition of the season. The Nittany Lions defeated the Chargers 10-4 and 11-3, to start off with a perfect 2-0 conference record.
Sophomore
Jackie McMenamin (Oreland, PA) started game one off with a leadoff triple to right field.
Samantha Friend (Southampton, PA) scored McMenamin with a follow up single to right field. Speedy Friend stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error, allowing teammate
Stephanie Andreoli (Richboro, PA) to score her with an RBI single. Abington went up on the board early with a 2-0 lead.
The Nittany Lions doubled their runs by scoring four in the top of the second inning. Hits came from senior
Danielle Hebling (Warminster, Pa.),
Mary Kate Smith (Springfield, PA) Stephanie Andreoli, and
Becca Dougherty (Churchville, PA) to add to Abington 's 6-1 lead. The Nittany Lions pushed one more run across the plate in the fourth inning with a RBI double from Doughtery that scored Andreoli. Senior
Becca Dougherty struck again with her bat in the top of the 6
th inning with a 2 run home run to contribute to Abington's 9-3 lead. Abington's last run came in the 7
th inning with an RBI from MaryKate Smith.
In game two, the Nittany Lions continued to attack the Chargers with their offense. In the top of the third inning,
Sam Friend and
Stephanie Andreoli hit back to back singles.
Becca Dougherty hit a double to left field scoring Friend for an early 1-0 Nittany Lion lead.
In the top of the fourth, Hebling reached on an error by the shortstop before advancing to second with a stolen base. Sophomore
Kourtney Schneider (Ewing, NJ) smacked a deep double to score Hebling, adding a run to Abington's 2-0 lead. Freshman
Akia Marshall (Albuquerque, NM) helped the Nittany Lions with a clutch 2RBI double to left field putting Abington up 4-0 at the top of the 5th. Later, in the top of the 7
th, Marshall earned her first collegiate home run with a 3 run homerun to contribute to Abington's 11-3 win.
Abington will travel NEAC opponent Gallaudet University tomorrow for a double header beginning at 1:00pm.
