MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- The Penn State Abington women's softball team played their makeup game against Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday afternoon. The Cougars had a 7
th inning comeback win to defeat the Nittany Lions 6-4.
Â
The game remained scoreless until the 3
rd inning where the Cougars capitalized on two errors by the Nittany Lions. Wentworth was able to push one more run in the fourth inning to take the 3-0 lead.
Â
It wasn't until the bottom of the 4
thinning when freshman
Akia Marshall (Albuquerque, NM) drove a single through the 5-6 hole to get Abington going. Senior
Becca Dougherty (Churchville, PA) followed her with a stand-up double that was just short of clearing the fence. With runners at second and third base,
Danielle Hebling (Warminster, Pa.) scored an RBI with a ground ball deep to the short stop, putting the first run on the board for Abington.
Â
The Nittany Lions carried their energy into the 5th inning whereÂ
Samantha Friend (Southampton, PA) started the rally with a lead off single through the left side.
Jackie McMenamin (Oreland, PA) laid down a sac bunt that she was able to beat out and move Friend to second. Marshall walked to load the bases with the number four hitter Dougherty at the plate. Dougherty reached on a fielder's choice but scored Friend to make the score 3-2. Ryan Rhoades drove a single to left field, loading the bases once more, but this time with freshman
Madison Mulka (Philadelphia, PA) at the plate. Mulka forced a walk, tying the score 3-3. Sophomore
Kourtney Schneider (Ewing, NJ) earned her first hit of the season with a clutch single to left field scoring Hebling and giving Abington the 4-3 lead.
Â
After the 5
th inning, Abington made 3 defensive errors, allowing Wentworth to escape with the 6-4 win. Senior
Becca Dougherty became Penn State Abington's All-Time Leader in strikeouts today with 195 career strikeouts.Â
Tomorrow Abington will face Coe College at 9:30am, followed by Waynesburg University at 1:30pm.
