7th Inning Rally Helps Abington Defeat Rivier College

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- The Penn State Abington women's softball team wrapped up their final day at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic. The Nittany Lions split two games today and finished the weekend with a 2-5 record.

Abington dropped game one to the University of Mary Washington 7-1. The lone run came in the 3rd inning after two defensive errors were made by the Eagles. There were five hits generated by Abington's offense from Jackie McMenamin (Oreland, PA), Becca Dougherty (Churchville, PA), Samantha Friend (Southampton, PA) Stephanie Andreoli (Richboro, PA), and Ryann Rhoades (Philadelphia, PA).

In game two, the Nittany Lions were tied 3-3 to Rivier College heading into the top of the 7th inning. Freshman Mary Kate Smith (Springfield, PA) dropped a sneaky bunt to the pitcher and advanced to second on the over throw. Smith used her lightning speed to steal third on a ball in the dirt, becoming the winning run on third base. Senior Samantha Friend drove a ball to center field, scoring Smith to give Abington the 4-3 lead. But the runs did not stop there.

Jackie McMenamin kept the rally going as she dropped a perfectly placed bunt for a base hit. With runners at second and first, Akia Marshall (Albuquerque, NM) singled to load the bases. A clutch double from senior Becca Dougherty scored two more runs across the plate extending Abington's 6-3 lead. Andreoli followed with a single to score Marshall. Two passed balls added two more runs for the Nittany Lions. Perfect defense in the bottom of the 7th inning gave Abington their second win of the season, by defeating Rivier College 9-3.

The Nittany Lions will host Widener University on Wednesday March 13th for a 3:00 pm doubleheader.
