Nittany Lions Pick Up Big Win Over Hilbert

ABINGTON, PA. – Behind a big performance from junior Alynn Phelan (Philadelphia, PA) the Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team picked up a big 16-10 win over Hilbert College on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve to 2-9 and 1-3 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

Phelan netted seven goals in the win which marks a season high for the junior attacker.  Sophomore Samantha Tropp (Strasburg, PA) put in a dominate defensive display with five ground balls and three caused turnovers in the win.

The Hawks were first on the board with two goals in the first ten minutes of action while shutting out the Nittany Lioins. The flood gates opened with 19 minutes on the clock when Kiera O'Keeffe (Yardley, PA) netted her goal, and only seconds later Phelan tied the game 2-2.  This would spark a 7-0 run with goals from five different players. Leading 7-2, the Hawks finally broke the Nittany Lions streak with just under 10 minutes left in the half. Lillian Diesh (San Carlos, CA) responded when she picked up the ground ball and streaked down the field for her goal to push the Nittany Lions lead to 8-3. Before the end of the half the Hawks shifted momentum with two goals to cut the lead 8-5 before the break.

In the second half Hilbert put two goals in the net to come within striking distance, but the Nittany Lions regrouped to pull off a four goal run highlighted by Tropps first goal of the season.  Up 12-7 the Nittany Lions held the Hawks to only two goals and put the visitors away for their first conference win of the season.

The Nittany Lions look to continue their success when they host Medaille College tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
