READING, Pa. - Down against their conference rivals the Penn State Abington baseball team rallied to a critical 9-8 win over Berks on Saturday afternoon. After the win the Nittany Lions improve to 17-14 overall and 10-2 in the conference.
Freshman
Bill Trimble (Yardley, PA) knocked his first collegiate home run to help lift the Nittany Lions to the win. Sophomore
Ryan McCarty (Yardley, PA) led the Nittany Lions going 2-of-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a walk.
With two on in the first inning
Paul Woodley (Levittown, PA) drove in the first run of the game for the Nittany Lions. Berks got onto the board in the third inning and took a 3-1 lead but
Joseph Rizzo (Gibbstown, NJ) answered in the bottom half of the inning with his RBI single. Berks extended their lead with a four run fourth inning to push the score to 7-2. Senior
Brett Guaglionona (Abington, Pa.) chipped away at the lead with his RBI single, and McCarty drove in another with his sacrifice fly. Abington kept the momentum going into the seventh inning and scored three runs highlighted by
Jaden Himmelreich's (Temple, PA) game tying RBI single. Trimble took the the lead with his home run, but Berks tied the game in the top of the ninth inning. With bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth McCarty drew the game winning RBI walk to take the first of the three game series from Berks.
Abington will host Berks tommorrow for a doubleheader with game one starting at 12:00 p.m.
