JENKINTOWN, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team picked up a crucial series sweep over their rivals Penn State Berks on Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions took game one 3-1 and held on to complete the sweep with a 4-2 victory. After today the Nittany Lions improve to 19-14 overall and 12-2 in the conference.
Sophomores
Ryan McCarty (Yardley, PA) and
Jaden Himmelreich (Temple, PA) dominated on the mound. McCarty picked up his NEAC leading sixth win of the season with three strikeouts in nine innings of work.
At the plate sophomore
Joseph Rizzo (Gibbstown, NJ) led the way going 4-of-5 with two RBIs.
In game one Berks was on the board in the second inning, but
Bill Trimble (Yardley, PA) tied the game with his RBI ground out. The deadlock continued until
Paul Woodley (Levittown, PA) drove in the go ahead run in the fourth inning, and Trimble added to the total with his deep sacrifice fly to center field. Â Himmelreich got into a jam in the top of the seventh inning with bases loaded but came through in the clutch with three consecutive outs to close out Berks.
McCarty kicked off the scoring for the Nittany Lions in the third inning with his sacrifice fly in the third inning and Rizzo added to the total with an RBI single. Later in the game Rizzo put another run across plate with another sacrifice fly. Trimble added to the total in the seventh inning when he drew an RBI walk. Berks would add two runs in the top of the ninth, but
Zach Brightbill (Birdsboro, PA) closed out the game and earned the save.
Next the Nittany Lions will host a series with Lancaster Bible starting next Friday afternoon.
