Softball Drops Two to Berks On Senior Day

ABINGTON, PA- The Penn State Abington women's softball team celebrated their three seniors Danielle Hebling (Warminster, Pa.), Samantha Friend (Southampton, PA), and Becca Dougherty (Churchville, PA) on Saturday afternoon against Penn State Berks. The Nittany Lions dropped both games in a close 7-6 and 2-1 defeat. Abington falls to 10-6 in conference, and 15-20 overall.

In game one, senior Becca Dougherty celebrated her special day with a powerful three run home run over the right field fence to put Abington up 3-1 in the bottom of the first inning. Berks answered back in the fourth inning by capitalizing on defensive errors made by Abington, and tied the game 3-3. But in the fourth inning, Stephanie Andreoli (Richboro, PA) doubled to score Friend, giving Abington the 4-3 lead. The senior class continued to shine when Danielle Hebling roped a laser RBI line drive to left field in the fifth inning that scored Marshall, and added a 5-4 lead for the Nittany Lions. Berks pushed two more runs across the plate, twice in the sixth inning and one more in the top of the seventh. Desperate for a rally, senior Sam Friend answered with a RBI single that scored Marshall. However, Abington's rally fell short with three runners left on base in the bottom of the 7th inning, giving Berks the 7-6 win.

Abington's bats were not as hot in game two, with the offense only producing five hits. Two came from Stephanie Andreoli, and one each for Becca Dougherty, Ryann Rhoades (Philadelphia, PA), and Kourtney Schneider (Ewing, NJ). The Nittany Lions scored their only run in the bottom of the first inning when Andreoli led the game off with a single to left field. Then, Becca Dougherty earned her fourth RBI of the day, when she scored Andreoli from third base.

Tomorrow Abington will host NEAC opponent Penn College at 12:00pm for their final game of the regular season.
