ABINGTON, PA- The Penn State Abington women's basketball team earned their second NEAC win this afternoon by defeating SUNY Cobleskill 67-63. With the win, the Nittany Lions improve to 4-6 on the season and remain a perfect 2-0 in conference.
Leading the way for Abington was senior Sydney Barrow (Philadelphia, PA) who finished with 16 points and five rebounds. Behind her was freshman Nakiyah Green (Philadelphia, PA) who earned her season best of 13 points, while collecting seven rebounds.
Sophomore Lacy MacLachlin (Boyertown, PA) got things moving early for Abington by draining two big three's, taking the 8-3 lead over the Tigers. MacLachlin finished the day with nine points for the Nittany Lions. Abington went up 10-0 over Cobleskill in a total team effort with baskets from Barrow, Nagbe, Gaddy, Green, and Graham. Abington led Cobleskill 35-31 heading into halftime.
Abington entered the second half with lights out defense from Senior Laquana Nagbe (Philadelphia, PA) who earned a season best of 10 rebounds, five assists, and eight points. However, the Tigers refused to go down without a fight, changing the lead six times in the second half.
With Abington leading 47-46 in the final quarter, the senior duo Barrow and Nagbe each pounded back to back baskets in the paint, extending Abington's lead to 51-46. Cobleskill retaliated by scoring their next eight points in the paint to take the 61-56 advantage over Abington. Â Again, the Nittany Lions turned to their senior veterans Barrow, Nagbe, and Angie Tabares (Hackensack, NJ) who each collected a basket to put Abington back in arms reach 63-62 before Nakiyah Green executed a perfect layup in the paint to put Abington on top 64-63.
With less than a minute to play, Cobleskill forced two fouls on the Nittany Lions. Ashya Gaddy (Philadelphia, PA) added one point to Abington's lead before freshman Dakiya Daniels (Vernon Hills, IL) drained two from the foul line, allowing Abington to escape with the 67-63 victory. Daniels finished the night with four points, three steals, and three rebounds.
Tomorrow Abington will close out the weekend by hosting NEAC opponent SUNY Poly at noon.
