ABINGTON, PA- The Penn State Abington women's basketball team closed out their NEAC weekend by hosting SUNY Poly, who also had a perfect 2-0 conference record heading into today's game. However, the Wildcats gave Abington their first conference loss of the season by defeating the Nittany Lions 72-59. Abington drops to 4-7 overall and 2-1 in conference.
Senior Sydney Barrow (Philadelphia, PA) earned her first double double of the season by leading Abington with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Also earning double digits today was birthday girl Lacy MacLachlin (Boyertown, PA) who put up a season best of 12 points, all of which came from behind the arc.
The Nittany Lions got off to a sluggish first quarter, being outscored by SUNY Poly 17-7. Abington was able to get back in the game by outscoring the Wildcats in the paint 14-8. Junior Ashya Gaddy (Philadelphia, PA) drove to the basket in efforts to put Abington back in arms reach by trailing 31-25 at the half. Gaddy finished the day with a total of 8 points and 11 rebounds in today's performance.
Trailing by nine in the third quarter, Abington refused to go down without a fight. MacLachlin hit two back-to-back three pointers to trail 40-35. Feeding off the high energy, freshman Nakiyah Green (Philadelphia, PA) drove to the basket twice to allow Abington to trail 41-39. Freshman Jyah Graham (Philadelphia, PA) brought the crowd to their feet after a deep three ball that put Abington in their closest trail of the day 43-42. Abington's offense came alive to allow them the 49-47 advantage heading into the final quarter.
However, foul trouble and six turnovers cost the Nittany Lions their first NEAC loss of the season, after dropping 72-59 to the Wildcats.
Up next the Nittany Lions will travel to NEAC opponent Gallaudet University this Wednesday for a 7:00pm tip off.
