Nittany Lions Lock Down Wildcats, 68-53

ABINGTON, PA. -   The Penn State Abington women's basketball team hosted Penn College and picked up an important conference win over the Wildcats 68-53 on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Nittany Lions improve to 6-7 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

Four Nittany Lions hit double digits with Sydney Barrow getting a double-double knocking down 14 points and getting 13 boards.  Junior Ashya Gaddy also recorded 14 points and led the Nittany Lions in assists with five.

The first quarter for the Nittany Lions and Wildcats went back and forth with four lead changes in the first five minutes of action. Penn College pulled ahead of the Nittany Lions focusing on their mid-range game knocking down their jump shots. Abington kept pace with the Wildcats by earning free-throws and converting their chances, but Abington trailed at the end of the first quarter 17-15.

Back-to-back three pointers from Lacy MacLachlin helped the Nittany Lions pull ahead 21-17 to open the second quarter. The defense shut down the Wildcats in the second period holing them to nine points, but Abington attacked the paint and took a 34-26 lead at the break.

In the first minute of the third period, the Nittany Lions pushed their lead to 13 points after another three-point shot from MacLachlin. Penn College chipped away at the lead with free-throws, but MacLachlin the three-point specialist couldn't be stopped. Gaddy helped the Nittany Lions maintain their lead throughout the period by showing off her mid-range game and draining her shots.  Abington pushed their lead to 17 points with a bucket from Barrow and held a comfortable 62-46 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Abington locked down the Wildcats offense in the fourth quarter only allowing seven points to earn the win.

Abington will be back in action when they host Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday night for Hype Night and Faculty and Staff Appreciation  with game time starting around 8:00 p.m.
