FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Behind a big day from the Nittany Lions bats, the Penn State Abington baseball team bounced back and took two wins to round out their day at the Methodist tournament on Sunday afternoon. Abington went to 10 innings to top Manhattanville 7-6, and later in the afternoon the Nittany Lions had a ninth inning come from behind win over Methodist 7-4. The Nittany Lions open their season 2-1 after the weekend.
McCarty led the Nittany Lions at the plate going 5-of-10 with four runs scored.
In the first game of the day the Nittany Lions fell behind the Valiants after they capitalized off of a wild pitch.Â
Jaden Himmelreich tied the game in the bottom half of the inning getting McCarty across the plate with his sacrifice fly.
 All tied at 1-1 the Valiants went on to score runs in the 2
nd, 3
rd, and 4
th inning to take a 4-1 lead. Abington responded in the bottom of the fourth with bases loaded,
Sean Doherty reached the bag with an RBI, and later in the inning
Gregg Sywulak added another with his RBI single to left center. Â
A double for the Valiants in the fifth inning gave them a 6-3 lead, but the Nittany Lions weren't finished at the plate yet. Abington chipped away at the lead in the 5
th and 7
th inning, but were still down 6-5 heading into the 9
th inning. Down by a run in the bottom of the ninth,
Bill Trimble stepped up to the plate as a pinch hitter, and made his moment count with a solo shot over the right wall to tie the game and force extra innings. In the bottom of the 10
th with bases loaded
Josh Baar sliced the game winning single to center field to give the Nittany Lions their first win of the season.
In game two again the Nittany Lions fell behind in the first inning after Methodist scored two runs. The Monarchs added to their lead in the 4th inning up 3-1 after the scored on a sacrifice fly.
Himmelreich got the Nittany Lions on the board when he drove in
Stevie Stevenson with his single up the middle in the 5
th inning. Later,
Paul Woodley put down a perfect bunt to get on base and score the runner. Freshman Demetrius Demarus tied the game for the Nittany Lions with his towering sacrifice fly.
In the sixth inning the Monarchs took advantage of an error and held a 4-3 lead until the 9
th inning. Â With two on and nobody out in the top of the 9
th inning, Himmelreich drove a deep ball to right center field for the game tying RBI double. All tied at 4-4 with two outs and bases loaded
Zach Morales stepped up to the plate and cleared the bases with his double down the left field line to give the Nittany Lions the 7-4 win over Methodist.
Abington will be back in action again when they head down to North Carolina for a weekend series against Guilford College starting Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
