Baseball Drops to Guilford, 10-5

GREENSBORO, NC- Today the Penn State Abington Baseball team competed in the first game of the three day game series against Guilford College. Abington fell to Quakers 10-5 and fall to an even 2-2 overall record this season.

Senior
Stevie Stevenson (Mt. Holly, NJ) led off the first inning with a stand up double to left center field. He later scored the first run of the day for the Nittany Lions off a throwing error by the third baseman. Ryan McCarty (Yardley, PA) reached base on a fielders choice, and later scored Abington's second run after a throwing error made by Guilford's defense.

The Quakers answered back by adding three runs in two innings. Guilford's best hitting of the day came in the third inning when they scored four runs off five hits. Trailing 7-2 at the top of the fourth,
Bill Trimble (Yardley, PA) kicked off the inning with a walk and was later scored when sophomore Louis Rossner (Delran, NJ) earned his first RBI of the season with a single up the middle.

Guildford extended their lead 10-3 in the fourth off four hits. Veteran Ryan McCarty showed fight for the Nittany Lions with a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Looking to rally at the top of the seventh inning, Stevenson singled to left field and later advanced to second on a passed ball. Two walks loaded the bases for
Darrien Mogel (Reading, PA), who delivered a clutch single to left field to cut the Quakers lead to 10-5. However, Abington rally fell short, and allowed the Quakers to take game one of the series.

Tomorrow the Nittany Lions will face Guilford at noon for the second game of the series.
