GREENSBORO, NC – After dropping the first two games at Guilford, the Penn State Abington baseball team bounced back in a big way, earning a 17-3 win over the Quakers to wrap up the three game series on Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions move to .500 with a 3-3 record overall.
Freshman
Demetrius Deramus had a career day at the plate. The center fielder went 4-of-6 with one run and four RBIs, and was just shy of hitting the cycle getting a single, double and triple against the Quakers. Junior
Ryan McCarty also had a big day scoring three runs, knocking in two RBI's and getting his second homer of the season. McCarty also had a good outing on the mound getting his first win of the season.
Guilford opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI double, and also taking advantage of an error up 2-0 on the Nittany Lions.
The Nittany Lions got a run back in the third inning with an RBI walk from
Jaden Himmelreich, and with the bases loaded Demarus cleared them with his double to right center to push the Nittany Lions ahead 4-2.
In the fifth inning Abington exploded again at the plate scoring another four runs after back-to-back-to-back RBI singles from
Bill Trimble,
Louis Rossner, and
Sean Doherty.
Abington added another four runs to their total in the seventh inning after McCarty slammed his pitch over the left field wall.
The Quakers added a run in the 8
th inning after getting an RBI on a ground out to Himmelreich.
The Nittany Lions capped off their big day with another five runs in the ninth inning highlighted by an RBI double to left center field from Himmelreich, and a huge triple to right field from Demarus.
The Nittany Lions will be off until they travel down to the RussMatt Invitational over spring break where they start off against Westfield State on March 7
th at 5:00 p.m.
