LEESBURG, FL – The Penn State Abington baseball team opened up their spring break slate with a 5-1 win against MASCAC favorite Westfield St. on Saturday night. The Nittany Lions improve to 4-3 for the season and topped an Owls team who was started the season receiving votes to be nationally ranked.
On the mound junior
Jaden Himmelreich had a dominate performance with seven strikeouts and only four hits against him in his nine innings of work. Four Nittany Lions recorded two hits with
Stevie Stevenson,
Ryan McCarty,
Zach Morales, and
Bill Trimble all getting a pair.
The Owls were first on the board, but it took them till the fifth inning when the batter took his pitch yard over the right field wall to give Westfield State the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning
Sean Doherty tied the game with his RBI ground out and in the sixth inning Himmelreich gave the Nittany Lions the lead off a sacrifice fly.
Paul Woodley took advantage of an error by the shortstop which allowed Trimble to get past the plate and give the Nittany Lions the 3-1 lead in the seventh inning. Later in the inning McCarty drove his pitch out to left field to knock in the Nittany Lions last two runs.
Westfield St. moved runners into scoring position in the eighth inning but couldn't get across the plate, and Himmelreich closed out the game with three up and down to wrap up his great performance.
Abington is back in action tomorrow when they face off against another MASCAC team in Fitchburg State at 5:30 p.m.
