WINTERHAVEN, FL – The Penn State baseball team was back in action and picked up two wins on Friday afternoon. The Nittany Lions started off with a 3-1 win over Dickinson, and took the twinbill with a 7-6 win over North Park University.
Abington improves to 6-7 for the season after picking up two wins.
Senior
Stevie Stevenson broke a career milestone of 100 hits in his four years with the Penn State Abington baseball team.
In game one, senior
Nick Hopely picked up his first win of the season after a standout performance on the mound. The senior pitcher went all nine innings and picked up five strikeouts and only one run.
The Red Devils were first on the board with an RBI single in the first. In the third inning junior
Ryan McCarty slammed his pitch for an RBI double to tie the game.
Abington went on top in the sixth inning when
Zach Morales drove his pitch to deep left field for a sacrifice fly, and
Darrien Mogel added another run with his RBI single.
Hopely shut down the Red Devils in the eighth and ninth inning going three up and three down to give the Nittany Lions the 3-1 win.
In game two,
Paul Woodley drove in the first run with a deep fly to left field to score
Jaden Himmelreich and give the Nittany Lions the early lead.
North Park struck back in the bottom half of the first with a solo shot to tie the game.
The Vikings took the lead in the third inning after a RBI single, but the Nittany Lions would rally a few innings later. In the fifth inning Himmelreich put Stevenson across the plate after a single to tie the game at 2-2.
In the sixth inning
Louis Rossner drove his pitch to the wall for an RBI double, and
Josh Baar picked up his first career home run with the Nittany Lions to make it 5-2.
North Park responded with a three run shot of their own in the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth Abington added another two runs thanks to
Zach Morales and
Nate Teagle.
The Vikings added a run in the ninth but it wasn't enough to overcome the Nittany Lions.
Abington will finish their season tomorrow when they face off against Beloit tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m.
