Baseball Falls to Fitchburg St. In Extra Innings

WINTERHAVEN, FL. – In the second game of the Russ Matt Invitational the Penn State Abington baseball team faced off against Fitchburg St. but lost 7-6 in 12 innings on Sunday night. The Nittany Lions drop to 4-4 after the loss.

Junior Paul Woodley led the Nittany Lions going 6-of-3 at the plate with a run scored while Ryan McCarty and Jaden Himmelreich both recorded a pair of hits.

The Nittany Lions got off to a hot start in the first inning. Abington took advantage of an error from the shortstop to get the first run of the game. With two runners on Darrien Mogel cleared the bases with his double out to left field and gave the Nittany Lions a 3-0 lead after one.

In the third inning the Falcons chipped away at the lead with an RBI single up the middle.

Abington tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning with a fly out from Zach Morales to get Stevie Stevenson home, and another RBI from Mogel.

Going into the sixth inning the Nittany Lions held a 5-2 lead, but the Falcons rallied in the inning getting another two runs by taking advantage of a throwing error.

In eighth inning Demetrius Deramus added on another run with his sharp single up the middle to give the Nittany Lions a 6-4 lead.

The Falcons rallied in the ninth and tied the game after taking advantage of a wild pitch, and getting another run off a sacrifice fly.

In extra innings the Nittany Lions struggled at the plate, and the Falcons broke through in the 12th inning with another RBI single.

Tomorrow the Nittany Lions will face off against another Massachusetts school in Wheaton College at 5:30 p.m.
