Softball Drops Two in Season Opener

MYRTLE BEACH, SC- The Penn State Abington softball team kicked open their season down at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Monday morning. The Nittany Lions lost both games 10-1 and 16-0.

In game one against Norwich University, the Cadets got on board first in the second inning with the early 3-0 lead. Abington was able to push a run across in the bottom of the fourth after Jackie McMenamin (Oreland, PA) led off the inning with a walk, and eventually came across the plate on a passed ball.

Norwich had a big offensive sixth inning, producing seven runs off of eight hits to give them the 10-1 advantage over Abington. Sophomores Mary Kate Smith (Springfield, PA) and Akia Marshall (Albuquerque, NM) showed fight for the Nittany Lions after Smith singled to start the inning, and Marshall pounded a ball down the left field line. However, Abington's rally came to a quick end, and the Nittany Lions took their first loss of the season.

In game two the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen run ruled Abington in five innings with a final score of 16-0. Mary Kate Smith and Shayna Cuiffitelli (Horsham, PA) were the only hits for the Nittany Lions.

Up next the Nittany Lions will face Medaille College tomorrow at 1:30pm, followed by Lycoming College at 5:30pm for the second day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
