ABINGTON, Pa. – In the first round of the Gettysburg Tournament the Penn State Abington men's basketball faced off against Hiram, but couldn't hold on in a 66-63 loss on Friday night. The Nittany Lions fall to 1-2 for the season.
Leading the way again was junior
Alex Podolski with 20 points six rebounds and three assists. Junior
Brian Randolph III added a double-double going 3-6 from downtown with 13 points and chipped in 11 boards.
The Terries pulled ahead early thanks to a pair of shots from behind the arc, but Abington kept pace getting into the lane and getting tough points in the paint. Abington tied the game half way through the period when senior guard
Mohamed Mansaray drained his shot from downtown and follow up later by hitting his free throw. With eight minutes to go in the half
Darrion Harris got to the bucket and gave the Nittany Lions their first lead of the game up 23-21 on the Terriers. Abington stayed one step ahead of the Terriers earning fouls and hitting their free throws to walk into the half up 34-30.
Early in the second half Harris hit his shot from behind the arch to give the Nittany Lions their biggest lead of the game with a 39-32 advantage. Hiram tried to build momentum but the Nittany Lions matched them shot for shot, but an 8-1 run for the Terriers tied the game with nine minutes left to play. Abington pulled ahead but every time the Terriers would respond with the game all tied with two minutes in regulation. The Terroirs took advantage of fouls and hit their free throws at the stripe, unfortunately the Nittany Lions when cold behind the arc and missed a pair of shots.  Abington had new life when Randolph drained a clutch three to bring the Nittany Lions within one point with 16 seconds on the clock. The Terriers hit their free throws and Abington had two more chances to tie the game again, but couldn't convert.
Abington will be in the consolation game for the Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament facing Mary Baldwin University at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow.
