Nittany Lions Drop Heartbreaker to Knights, 63-62

ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team hosted Arcadia University but dropped a late 63-62 heartbreaker to the Knights on Friday night. After the loss the Nittany Lions fall to 1-3 for the season.

Senior Wynter Bess led the offense for the Nittany Lions racking up a career high 26 points and added four rebounds and four steals for the Nittany Lions.  Sophomore Angela Sanders also had a career night scoring 22 points and scooped six rebounds.  Sophomore Camille Fleming did the dirty work under the bucket and pulled in 15 rebounds for the Nittany Lions.

In the first quarter Abington struggled holding onto the ball losing eight turnovers and were cold from floor. The Nittany Lions struggles gave the Knights a chance to take a 22-10 lead in the first period thanks to 42 percent shooting and going 3-of-8 from thee.

The Nittany Lions tightened up the defense in the second quarter and Bess energized the rally.  The senior drained her shot out of the gate and shifted momentum in the Nittany Lions favor with a steal that was taken to the rim to cut the deficit 23-16.  Another steal from Bess was taken to the rim again, and Sanders finshed off a 10 run for the Nittany Lions to bring the game within a point.  Arcadia battled back with an 8-2 run of their own and held a 31-24 lead at the break.

Both teams came out firing in the second half with the Nittany Lions matching the Knights shot for shot. Sanders brought the Nittany Lions back within a point when she drained her three ball, down 40-39.  With three minutes left on the clock the Nittany Lions tied the game 46-46 after another bucket in the paint from Sanders. Arcadia pulled ahead again but right before the break a step-back jumper from Bess tied the game up 51-51 going into the fourth quarter.

Abington took another lead after Sanders got to the line an hit her free-throws, to then sink another three-pointer on the next possession.  The Knights chipped away at the slim lead and pulled ahead by a point. Abington did well to stay within a point and had a chance to take the win at the last second, but the shot didn't fall in their favor.

The Nittany Lions will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Delaware Valley University at 5:30 p.m.
