GLENSIDE, PA. – Behind a career performance from senior
Mohamed Mansaray the Penn State Abington men's basketball team opened their season with a 74-63 win over Arcadia University on Saturday night.
Leading the way, Mansaray went 5-of-9 from behind the arc and netted 29 points for the Nittany Lions. Juniors
Brian Randolph III and
Alex Podolski both recorded double-doubles in points and rebounds. Sophomore
Darrion Harris made a strong debut with 11 points on the night.
The hosts took an early lead in the first five minutes of action with the Nittany Lions down 11-5 in the first half. Abington trailed but kept the game close until the 10 minute mark, when they converted their free-throws. Over the next five minutes the lead changed hands six times with the Knights taking a 25-22 lead thanks to a clutch shot from behind the arc. Down the wire Arcadia held a 31-25 advantage but the Nittany Lions roared ahead with an 11-2 run thanks to Podolski pounding the paint. Abington went into the break with a slim 36-33 lead.
In the second half the Nittany Lions and Knights traded blows, but back-to back shots from down town by Mansaray gave the Nittany Lions their biggest lead of the game 47-39. The Knights didn't back down and tied the game 54-54 with 11 minutes left in the game. Harris spurred the Nittany Lions back in front with seven points in a 14-2 run for Abington, which pushed the lead to double digits. The hosts tried to build momentum but Mansaray put the final nail in the coffin with his huge dunk in the final minutes of action.
Abington will return home and host Cairn Universtiy on Monday night at 7:00 p.m.
