ABINGTON- In her debut senior guard Cassie Tavormina led the Penn State Abington women's basketball team to a thrilling 82-74 come from behind win over Rosemont College on Tuesday night.
The senior made herself known with a 30-point performance hitting 50 percent of her shots and added eight rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Angela Sanders started her career out with a double-double knocking down 21 points and added 11 rebounds.
Abington started out hot with an 11-2 run to start the first period hitting some early three-throws. Rosemont battled back and took a slim 17-16 lead with two minutes remaining in the quarter. The Ravens stole momentum in the final minutes and outscored the Nittany Lions 9-1 and had a 26-17 advantage at the break.
In the second period Abington chipped away at the lead and came within three points after a tough basket in the paint by Wynter Bess. Rosemont kept the Nittany Lions from taking the lead after another 11-4 run for the Ravens down the stretch. The Ravens went into the half up 44-36 thanks to their 71 percent average from behind the arc.
Abington kept their game in the paint in the third period and earned a pair of buckets early, but the Ravens kept pace and didn't let the Nittany Lions gain momentum. A pair of shots from behind the arc for Rosemont pushed their lead to double digits but the Ravens would be hit with foul trouble. Abington chipped away by earning free throws and a layup from Alexis Hunter brought the Nittany Lions back within three points. The Ravens rallied and pulled off another 10-3 run to hold a 65-58 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Ravens foul trouble caught up with them and Abington ground down the lead and took the advantage after a deep three from Bess. With three minute to go the Ravens took back the lead 73-72 but Abington's 9-1 run down the stretch put the Nittany Lions on top thanks to their shots at the stripe.
Abington will be on the road at the York Tournament this weekend where they will face York in the first round with tip off at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
