ABINGTON, PA. – It took 365 days for the Penn State Abington softball team to take the field after the year long pause on athletics, but Abington traveled to Neumann University on Saturday afternoon to face the Knights.  The hosts handed the Nittany Lions an 8-0 loss and game one, and stole a 7-6 win after a walk off winner in game two.

Megan Tomoney went 3-of-5 with a run, two RBIs, two doubles and a stolen base. Senior
Jackie McMenamin and junior
Mary Kate Smith also recorded doubles for the day.

In game one the Knights pulled ahead in the first inning with two runs and added runs in 3
rd, 4
th and 5
th inning. At the plate Abington struggled with four hits, but freshman
Laura VanHoeven earned two singles in her freshman debut.

The Knights took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Abington would respond in the third after Tomoney doubled down the left field line to score the first run of the 2021 season for the Nittany Lions. Abington tied the game in the fifth inning when Tomoney doubled to right center field and
Jenna Gorman gave the Nittany Lions the lead when she drove a single up the middle to score Tomoney. In the bottom half of the inning the Knights took advantage of a throwing error to take back the lead ahead 4-3 after five innings. Abington stole momentum back in the sixth when Mcmenamin drove in a run off a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning the Nittany Lions also took advantage of an error to tie the game. In the top of the seventh inning the Nittany Lions took the lead after Smith drove her pitch out to right field for a RBI double giving Abington a 6-4 advantage. Abington started off in trouble with back-to-back walks and the Knights made them pay with a RBI single to chip away at the lead. The next batter took her pitch to deep left field for a walk off double.

Abington looks to bounce back when they host Cairn University on Tuesday March 23, at 3:00 p.m. for a doubleheader.
