ABINGTON, Pa. ā The Penn State Abington softball team earned a perfect start to their conference season with a sweep of Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday afternoon. Abington blanked the visitors 10-0 in five innings in game one and finished off their Penn State rivals 11-3 in game two.
The Nittany Lions improve to 2-2 for the season and 2-0 in the conference.
Senior
Stephanie Andreoli led the Nittany Lions going 4-of-7 at the plate and knocking in three RBIs between both games.Ā Sophomore
Megan Tomoney dominated with six RBIs and a run scored.
In game one Abington struck first in the second inning when
Kourtney Schneider doubled out to center field and drove in the games first run. Ā Harrisburg loaded up the bases for freshman Laura Vanhoeven and she drew a walk to give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead.Ā Abington finished the scoring when they took advantage of an error from the short stop that allowed
Maddie Duffy to score.Ā In the third, Harrisburg was in trouble again. With bases loaded, the pitcher walked in another run to give Abington the 4-0 lead. At the top of the order,
Mary Kate Smith drove a single through the middle to put another two runners past the plate. Another single from Tomoney added two runs to their total, and Andreoli capped off the big inning with an RBI double out to deep left field. Ā A double in the fourth inning from Vanhoeven gave Abington a 10-0 lead, and on the mound the freshman kept Harrisburg off the board for her first win of the season.
Abington threatened in the first inning of game two. Andreoli stepped up with two on and drove her pitch out to center field to score the games first run.
Harrisburg responded in the second inning with two runs off of three hits and lead the hosts 2-1.
In the bottom half of the inning Abington responded with bases loaded,
Jenna Gorman beat the play at home and slid in safe to tie the game 2-2.Ā An error by the first baseman helped Abington take a 3-2 lead after two innings.
Harrisburg took advantage of an error in the third inning to tie the game back up.
The deadlock didn't last long, and Abington broke the game wide open in the bottom of the inning. Ā A pair of errors by Harrisburg helped Abington pick up another two runs. With bases loaded and two outs, senior
Jackie McMenamin drove her pitch up the middle with to give the Abington a 6-3 lead. Tomoney stepped up to the plate and hit a bases clearing bomb out to deep center field to give Abington a commanding lead.Ā In the bottom of the fifth inning three consecutive doubles by McMenamin, Tomoney, and Andreoli mercy ruled Penn State Harrisburg in a 11-3 win.
Abington looks to continue their momentum when they travel to Penn State Berks on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
