Nittany Lions Split in season Opener

ABINGTON, PA. – In their first game in a year the Penn State Abington baseball team traveled to Immaculata and split the doubleheader with them on Sunday afternoon.  A huge second inning for the Nittany Lions helped them take game one 12-6, but the Mighty Macs rallied in the second game with a 15-3 win over Abington.

Senior Paul Woodley hit a career milestone of 100 hits leading Abington with four runs off of three hits, two RBIs and his third career homer.

In the opener the Nittany Lions took advantage of a throwing error by the catcher to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning.  Sophomore Sean Doherty kicked off a nine run inning in the second when he drove his pitch down the left field line to knock home a run. Junior Ryan McCarty sliced his pitch to the center field for another RBI single giving Abington the 4-0 lead.  Another single from Zach Morales added to the Nittany Lions total.  A deep ball down the left field line from Brendon Reese added another two runs on the board. Darrien Mogel capped off the scoring with his RBI double to center field giving Abington a commanding 10-0 lead after one and a half innings.  Immaculata chipped away at the lead with a pair of solo homers in the second, fifth and eighth inning.  Woodley answered their home runs with a bomb over the left field wall that sealed the 12-6 victory in game one.

Abington fell behind in game two when Immaculata scored six unanswered runs in the first four innings.  Senior Jaden Himmelreich notched a single to left field to score two runs in the fifth inning. The Mighty Macs would go on to score another nine runs in the remaining innings to keep the game out of reach.

Abington will return to action this week with a road contest on Tuesday, and a home doubleheader against the College of New Jersey on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
