Baseball Dominates Berks in Doubleheader

READING, PA. – The Penn state Abington baseball team kicked off their conference season with a massive sweep over rivals Penn State Berks on Wednesday afternoon. Abington took game one of the doubleheader with a 11-3 score line, and dominated in game two winning 18-2.

The Nittany Lions improve to 6-1 overall and a 2-0 conference record.

Junior Ryan McCarty had a monster performance at the plate going 7 of 8 with four doubles, a triple, six runs scored, and two RBIs. For the first time in program history four consecutive homers were hit by Zach Morales, Darrien Mogel, Justin Fogel and Brendon Reese in game two.

In game one Abington tacked on two runs in the first inning highlighted by an RBI single sliced up the middle by Morales. Up 2-0 in the second inning, Abington added two more runs to their total off another RBI single out to left field by Sean Doherty.

Berks cut the lead when they knocked a solo shot over the left field wall but couldn't do more damage.

In the fourth inning, Morales earned another RBI single to give Abington the 5-1 lead. A double from McCarty highlighted a three run fifth inning for Penn State Abington.  RBI singles from Bill Trimble and Louis Rossner in the seventh inning put the game out of reach for Penn State Berks.

Game two got out of hand early with Abington putting up nine runs with RBI singles from Doherty, Reese, Morales and Stevie Stevenson while McCarty and Reese notched RBI doubles.

Berks took advantage of an error to score their run in the third inning.

Abington broke the game open in a wild sixth inning with four consecutive homers  and took an 18-1 lead to finish off their statement win against Berks.

The Nittany Lions will be back in action when they host Lancaster Bible this Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
