Abington Sweeps the Wildcats

ABINGTON, PA. – In the heart of their conference run the Penn State Abington baseball team picked up another series sweep against Penn College on Monday afternoon. The Nittany Lions took game one 11-5 and completed the sweep with a 10-4 victory to improve to 13-2 overall and 9-1 in the conference.

Sophomore Sean Doherty led the Nittany Lions going 3-of-5 in the series with four RBIs and four runs scored.  On the mound Darrien Mogel picked up his third win of the season with three strikeouts.

In game one Penn College took an early lead after the Nittany Lions gave up two errors and a pair of base hits in the first inning. Abington responded in the bottom half of the inning. With bases loaded and two outs Doherty stepped up to the plate and smashed his pitch to deep center field for a bases clearing triple.  Up 5-2 in the second the Nittany Lions piled on the runs with RBIs hits from Zach Morales and Paul Woodley. Again with bases loaded Doherty stepped up and showed his patience and drew an RBI walk. The Nittany Lions chipped in runs in the third fifth and sixth inning to earn the first game win.

Senior Jaden Himmelreich was first to get on the board in game two with his RBI single through the right side. Penn College responded in the second inning with a run of their own. A triple From Ryan McCarty put two runs across the plate. Penn College chipped away at the lead, but a big third inning put the Nittany Lions out in front. A triple from Stevie Stevenson highlighted a three run inning and put the Nittany Lions up 6-2. A solo shot from Morales to deep center field kept the Nittany Lions in front.  Abington outscored Penn College 4-2 in the remaining innings to clinch the sweep.

Abington will be on the road at Wells College on Thursday afternoon for another NEAC doubleheader.
