Baseball Honors Seniors and Sweeps Berks

ABINGTON, Pa. – On senior day for the Nittany Lions, the Abington baseball team took down Penn State Berks in a series sweep on Saturday afternoon. On a 7-game win streak, Abington improves to 17-2 overall and 13-1 in the conference.

In between games the Nittany Lions honored Stevie Stevenson, Zach Bregenzer, Paul Woodley, Michael Keith and Nate Teagle for senior day and their contribution to the program.

Freshman Justin Fogel led the Nittany Lions going 6-of-8 with four runs and two RBI and a solo shot over the right field Wall.  In the second game, Senior Ryan McCarty hit his 11th career homer only two shy of the program record.

In the first two innings of game one, the Nittany Lions were in a stalemate until Berks broke the deadlock in the top of the third. Fogel tied the game with a bomb to right field.  Abington would add to their total in the fifth highlighted by a McCarty double. Singles from Stevenson and Fogel made the game 7-1, and Brendon Reese capped off the scoring with a RBI double down the right line to put away Berks.

Abington took advantage of Berks' struggle on the mound and popped four runs in the first inning underscored by a two run double from Jaden Himmelreich to left center field.  In the next inning Berks added two runs of their own but the hosts led 4-2.  In the fifth McCarty drilled his pitch down the left line and over the wall to make it 5-2.  Berks began to rally and tied the game in the seventh inning off a homer of their own. In the seventh Zach Morales had the game winning single out to left field and Abington held on for the win.

Tomorrow Abington hosts Harrisburg for a critical doubleheader that will decide who hosts the NEAC Tournament at 1:00 p.m.
