ABINGTON, Pa – Needing a sweep to win the regular season championship, the Penn State Abington baseball team earned a come from behind 3-2 win in game one, but fell to Penn State Harrisburg in game two 15-11 on Sunday afternoon. Abington moves to 18-3 overall and 14-2 in the conference.
On the mound
Jaden Himmelreich put in a strong performance with eight strikeouts in seven innings and only two runs given up.
The long ball was Harrisburg's strength, scoring the first two runs of game one off of homers giving them a 2-0 lead. Later
Ryan McCarty took advantage of an error to score a run in the fifth inning. Abington tied the game in clutch time when
Sean Doherty scored off a fielder's choice. Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 9
th inning Abington loaded up the bases and took advantage of an error to score the game winning run.
Harrisburg kept hitting homers and led game two 3-0 off a pair of homers in the first three innings. Abington responded by adding another three runs taking advantage of a pair of throwing errors by the third baseman. In the fourth bases were loaded for Harrisburg and they added to their total with back-to-back walked in runs to take back the lead. Again Harrisburg slammed another homer to go up 8-4, but finally the Nittany Lions answered with one of their own as McCarty slammed his pitch to deep center field for a two run shot. In the sixth
Darrien Mogel added a homer of his own over the left field wall. Abington went on to score another four runs to take an 11-9 lead going into the final inning. With bases loaded and one out Harrisburg knocked a grand slam in, and followed it up with another homer to put away Abington.
Abington will host the NEAC Semifinals as the No. 2 seed playing No. 3 Penn College on Sunday afternoon.
