Nittany Lions Take Two from Wells

AURORA, NY –Behind a big offensive performance the Penn State Abington softball team, the Nittany Lions went up to New York and swept Wells College on Sunday afternoon.  Abington improves to 9-9 overall and 9-7 in the conference to secure a spot in the NEAC Tournament.
 
In the doubleheader, senior Jackie McMenamin went 4-of-4 at the plate with five runs scored and an RBI under her belt. Over the weekend McMenamin also became the all-time leader in stolen bases for the Nittany Lions with 25.
 
In the third inning of game one, Abington got on the board with back-to-back RBI singles from Stephanie Andreoli and Elyssa Bohr. Senior Kourtney Schneider stepped up to the plate and doubled to drive in another urn. After the double. With two on and two outs, Laura VanHoeven doubled to give Abington a 6-0 lead. A walk from McMenamin loaded the bases for Megan Tomoney and she blasted the pitch for a double to score another two runs. In the fifth the Nittany Lions added another run to put away Wells 9-1.
 
Wells took advantage of a defensive error in the first inning of game two to take an early lead. The Nittany Lions loaded the bases in the third for Megan Tomoney and she promptly cleared them with a three run double. Abington added another run off a sacrifice fly from Jenna Gorman to take a 4-1 lead.  Wells chipped away at the lead, but in the fourth Abington added another three runs. The Nittany Lions were a terror on the base path with seven stolen bases for the Blue and White. In the fifth inning Abington closed out the game with five runs including two RBI doubles from McMenamin and Gorman.
 
Abington will wait to see who they will face in the first round of the tournament with games left to be played.
