Nittany Lions Upset Bears in OT Thriller

COLLEGEVILLE, PA. – After almost sitting for two hours in a lighting delay the Penn State Abington men's soccer team rallied from a goal behind to stun Ursinus College 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday night. After the long night the Nittany Lions improve to 2-2 before they enter conference play.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Sheldon stood out between the sticks making seven saves after facing 16 shots for the Nittany Lions. Sophomore Michael Thomas picked up his first goal since August 31st of 2019 in a 7-1 win over Bryn Athyn.

In the first half both goalkeepers stood out making three saves each and keeping the game scoreless at the break. During halftime the game was delayed almost two hours for lighting in the area.

In the second half the Bears drew first blood with a goal from the right side that beat the keeper in the 52nd minute of action.  The Nittany Lions regrouped and luck was on their side taking advantage of own goal that was crossed in and deflected in by the defender in the 70th minute. Both teams pressed but couldn't break through until the second overtime.

Freshman Brian Gibson was dangerous the right wing and crossed the ball to Thomas who headed the ball in to the top drawer in the 103rd minute to give the Nittany Lions the win.

Abington will face off against reigning United East Champions Penn State Harrisburg when they come to town on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
